It is fascinating to observe that many of the practices the ancient Egyptians used are now becoming popular as natural health therapies and acknowledged as holistic medicines. An ancient Egyptian natural therapy that is being revived by the masses today is the use of ear coning or ear candling. Ear coning is used to unclog the excess wax (cerumen) and debris from the ear canal. The practice is very effectual after a reflexology treatment since it helps loosen indolent mucus from the sinus.
The earliest Egyptians used hollow papyrus reeds for the practice of ear coning. Today, we use what are called ear candles. The ear candles are hollow, tube-like cones made from unbleached cotton or linen strips dipped in paraffin, beeswax, or herbs. One end is placed gently at the opening of the external auditory canal and the other end is burned, sending smoke and warmth inside the ear creating a mild vacuum effect that draws the cerumen and any debris into the hollow of the candle.
Ear candling is a comfortable way to clean out accumulated wax and other debris. Ear candles were part of the ancient healing process practiced by the Chinese, Native American and Mayan societies, and the Egyptians. Ear candling was even considered a spiritual practice that also cleared the mind and senses. Ear candling stimulates and detoxifies the lymph system, removes excessive cerumen and allows better hearing, usually immediately. They also clear "swimmers ear," where the cerumen stops water clearing from the ear, allowing bacteria to fester. Ear candles also clear itching mold caused by candida yeast allery, and help remove parasites growing in the ear.
This practice, unlike the high-pressure cotton buds is gentler, inexpensive, and harmless. The process is soothing, and takes only about forty-five minutes. Most people prefer this method of cleaning out their excess ear wax and find it hundred percent more relaxing and soothing. With ear candling, nothing goes into the ear only the cerumen and other accumulations are pulled into the cone. But be sure to follow directions, and never do this alone. For best results, seek a skilled practitioner such as an otologist or otolaryngologist to do this for you.
